It’s been a weird few days, and I still have a stack of things on my hypothetical “todo list” that should have been cleared, or at least started, in the past few days. At one stage I was worried it was a side-effect of my efforts to change sleeping patterns; the reality, I think, is that I simply needed the break and the long weekend was an ideal opportunity to take one!

It’s not like I’ve sat around doing nothing – we’ve been to a couple of kids’ birthday parties, I’ve fixed up some fencing in the back yard, and I’ve also got to grips with some Facebook integration in ExpressWAHPz (giving subscribers an easy way to publish content on their business pages, now that Static FBML is being phased out). I also had a super-fantastic phone conversation with a lady in Sydney to chat about mutually beneficial business opportunities.

Essentially, the past few days have been filled with a bit of R&R, and what can best be described as pottering about and tinkering with interesting bits and pieces here and there!

Back to the day job tomorrow, and hopefully the motiviation mojo will make a welcome return!

While it’s been truly enjoyable, scribbling out a few blog posts and catching up in regard to some of the main themes encountered in the past few years… the fact is that March is in danger of becoming a non-productive month if I just sit around reminiscing and gazing in the vague direction of my navel!

It’s actually quite useful to take the foot off the pedal every once in a while, and this has been one of those times. During this period of “downtime” I was inspired to sharpen the focus of this blog further, changed the site theme to one that is cleaner and simpler, and even managed a fair bit of writing in order to get things up to speed.

Now, with the change of seasons (it is now Autumn here in the southern hemisphere) and having paused for a few deep breaths, it is time to put the focus back on action rather than words. There is no real plan as such; the overall direction is fairly well defined, detailed plans require time to create, and usually end up becoming stale and ignored anyway!

This blog will continue to act as a form of journal, the ExpressWAHPz.com news/blog page will be focused on service news and tips (in conjunction with the Facebook page and newsletter). Similarly avallach.com will be more about the packages and services available (bundling ExpressWAHPz in various ways) – and ultimately I see a more general “WAHP business services” focus for that site.

Something I have taken on board from ZenHabits.net is the idea of changing habits one at a time; this is already paying dividends in terms of being a little more organised, and the next important “habit” I need to work on is to develop more structure around use of my time (i.e. scheduling time for specific tasks and areas of activity). Currently I am too easily distracted from the task in hand. Not by “bad” stuff like email or Facebook – the distractions come from “good” stuff like fixing a bug in a piece of ExpressAHPz code when I should be focused on designing a database structure as part of my contracting work.

So, I’m winning the battle between productive versus non-productive – the challenge now is to ensure that all tasks get a fair slice of my time.

I read this morning that the Australian Federal Police (AFP) are calling for the social networking site Facebook to employ a law enforcement expert in Australia. Now I understand the reasons behind all this, and I also happen to think that the police should actively patrol online communities just as they always used to patrol “real” communities (some of us are old enough to remember community beat officers, PCs and WPCs who used to patrol on foot, getting to know their local communities etc.)

The notion that it is Facebook’s responsibility, and that Facebook should fund a liaison officer / law enforcement expert is bullshit, and would set a dangerous precedent for software / site developers everywhere.

Let Facebook stick to developing software and content, and give the police enough funds to set up and operate an effective online unit.
